What to see and do in Valdealgorfa

Valdealgorfa
Village
Valdealgorfa is a municipality of Bajo Aragón, in Teruel, situated at 510 metres above sea level on a relief of high plains and torrents in the Guadalope basin. It has 581 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its name may derive from the Arabic al-gurfa, meaning loft or attic. After the Christian conquest it remained linked to Alcañiz as a dependent hamlet under the 1157 founding charter, and in 1179 it passed, together with Alcañiz, to the Order of Calatrava; daily life was organised around the Confraternity of San Martín and Santa María Magdalena, which fought for the place's autonomy. This came in 1624, when it broke away from Alcañiz together with Valjunquera and La Codoñera through a concord ratified by Philip IV in 1629. Since 2017 it has had the Pardo Sastrón Exhibition Centre, devoted to traditional costume.

Separation from Alcañiz through the 1624 concord
Historical milestone
In 1624 Valdealgorfa, together with Valjunquera and La Codoñera, detached itself from the jurisdiction of Alcañiz by means of a concord that Philip IV ratified in 1629. The three places came to be governed by their own councils.
Black olives and olivada
Food and drink
