What to see and do in Fórnoles

Fórnoles
Village
Fórnoles is a small municipality in the Teruel Matarraña, at 706 metres above sea level and with 71 inhabitants, in the mountainous area separating the Guadalope and Matarraña valleys, with pine forests of Aleppo pine and monumental cypresses at the sanctuary of Montserrat. Its name comes from the Latin furnulos, oven, perhaps because of the oven-shaped caves in the surroundings, recalled on its coat of arms. Linked for centuries to the Order of Calatrava, in 1337 Peter III the Ceremonious granted it the title of villa, but in 1397 its council agreed with Peñarroya to merge into that village; in 1608 Philip III granted the separation, although Peñarroya appealed. During the War of the Reapers it had to endure the billeting of troops. It preserves remains of its defensive walls and of a castle now almost gone.
Church of Fórnoles
Monument
Church of the sanctuary of Our Lady of Monserrate — the hermitage of Santa Mónica —, at the head of a valley that runs down to Fórnoles, a town in Teruel province, in the Matarraña region. The complex, which also includes a two-storey cloister and a well, was built in Gothic style from the 14th century onward and was extended between the 17th and 18th centuries; it consists of a single nave of three bays, covered by a ribbed vault in the central bay and by shell-shaped domes in the main chapel and in one side chapel, and of an ashlar bell tower reached by a spiral staircase from the choir. Around the sanctuary grows a notable group of cypresses listed as monumental trees.
