What to see and do in Valdeltormo

Valdeltormo
Village
Valdeltormo is a municipality of Teruel in the Matarraña comarca, in Aragon, covering 16 square kilometres with a little over 300 inhabitants, where a variant of Catalan specific to the Franja de Aragón is spoken. It was recovered for Aragon by Alfonso II in 1168, and in 1643, during the War of Catalonia, it was sacked and burned. In its territory, beside the Matarraña river, Iberian sites such as Les Torrasses and Los Trullets have been excavated, and above all the Torre Cremada, a watchtower of Ibero-Roman origin with an elliptical base and occupation documented up to medieval times. The earliest settlers of the territory date back to the Tossal de Santa Bárbara, with remains of a settlement from the Final Bronze Age and the early Iron Age.
Church of Valdeltormo
Monument
The church of the Assumption of Valdeltormo stands opposite the town hall; the doorway bears the engraved year of its construction, 1698, although an earlier church already existed in the village, documented since 1407. Rectangular in plan, it consists of two naves of five bays with a Baroque dome over the chancel, a sacristy, three chapels and a staircase leading up to the choir and to the espadaña bell-gable. In the west wall a simple doorway opens, with a semicircular arch flanked by pilasters and crowned by an entablature with an empty niche. The original altarpiece was lost during the Civil War; the present one, the work of the Navarro workshop of Zaragoza, was inaugurated in 1954.

Activity
The Val de Zafán railway passed through Valdeltormo, begun in 1891 to link inland Aragon with Tortosa; the Matarraña section was not opened until 1942 and was closed in 1973, and its route is now used as a greenway (vía verde).

Historical milestone
The line that was to link the interior of Aragon with Tortosa was begun in 1891, but the stretch that crosses the Matarraña did not open until 1942 and was closed in 1973 for lack of traffic. Its route, with tunnels and viaducts, is used today as a greenway.
