Mirambel
Village
Mirambel is a municipality in the comarca of the Maestrazgo, in the province of Teruel, with 110 inhabitants (INE 2025), situated at the foot of the mountain of San Cristóbal, beside the Rambla de Cantavieja. Already settled in Iberian times, as shown by the site of El Castellar, its first documented mention is the granting of the lordship by James I of Aragon to the French knight Raimundo Beneyto; in 1157 Alfonso II granted it the same fuero as Zaragoza. For much of the Middle Ages it was a frontier post between Aragon and the Kingdom of Valencia, and its walls withstood French troops until 1813. Declared a historic-artistic site and awarded a prize by Europa Nostra, it is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Spain and was the setting for Ken Loach's film Land and Freedom.
