What to see and do in Todolella

Todolella
Village
Todolella, known as la Todolella or la Tolella in Valencian, is a municipality in the comarca of Els Ports, in Castellón, with cobbled streets and stone façades, with 136 inhabitants. Of Muslim origin, it was conquered by James I, who in 1242 granted a charter of settlement in favour of Ramón de Caldera, and in 1691 achieved independence from Morella at the hands of Charles II. At the highest point of the village stands the castle of Todolella, a 14th-century palace-castle of quadrangular plan that was the residence of its first feudal lords; also preserved are the parish church of San Bartolomé, the hermitages of San Cristóbal and San Onofre and a 15th-century bridge over the Cantavieja river. In the hamlet of Sarañana lies the Romanesque settlement of the same name.
Castle of Todolella
Monument
The castle of Todolella, from the 14th century, is a defensive building of a seigneurial character situated above the village, reached by paths from the town centre. Its main façade preserves three pointed-arch windows with vegetal tracery, and inside a courtyard with Gothic arcades, an ashlar well and wooden beam ceilings with plaster vaults, under a curved-tile roof. It is completed with battlemented walls and two side towers, as well as a small defensive stretch of wall at the rear. It has been declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 9 October 1996, with reference number RI-51-0009340.
Gothic bridge of Todolella
Monument
Bridge of late medieval origin, of ashlar, spanning the ravine at the foot of the village of Todolella, dated by the municipality's Wikipedia entry to the 15th century; the sources do not agree on the name of the watercourse it crosses, some referring to the Calders and others to the Cantavieja.
Festivities of Todolella
Activity
Todolella's patronal festival is held from 20 to 31 August. The municipality also celebrates San Antonio Abad (16-17 January), a pilgrimage to San Cristóbal (1 May) and another to San Miguel (29 September).
Abandoned village of Sarañana
Curiosity
Abandoned former settlement in the municipal district of Todolella, reached by footpaths that also lead to the town's castle and Gothic bridge.
The settlement charter of Todolella
Historical milestone
Dated in Valencia, the settlement charter organized the Christian settlement of the place after the conquest of this formerly Muslim valley; the town went on depending on Morella until the privilege of Charles II of 1691.
The Tronques of Todolella
Food and drink
The communal grill of Carnival Sunday: the neighborhood roasts meat in the square and afterwards auctions the pieces, a collective meal that helps to finance the festival and keeps alive the memory of the domestic pig slaughter.
