What to see and do in La Mata de Morella

La Mata de Morella
Village
La Mata de Morella is a small hamlet in the comarca of Els Ports, on the banks of the Cantavieja river and near Morella, repopulated by order of Blasco de Alagón after the conquest and devoted during the Middle Ages to sheep grazing, an activity that brought it its greatest prosperity before the general crisis of the Maestrazgo especially affected it. It did not obtain the title of independent town until the privilege granted by Charles II in 1691, and until 1916 it was simply called La Mata. With around 196 inhabitants, it preserves the parish church of Gothic structure dedicated to the Virgin of the Snows, the hermitages of San Gil, Santa Bárbara and San Cristóbal, and a 16th-century town hall. Its patronal festivities are celebrated in the first week of August.
