What to see and do in Portell de Morella

Portell de Morella
Village
Portell de Morella is a municipality in the comarca of Els Ports, in the province of Castellón, with 155 inhabitants, on mountainous, limestone terrain described by Madoz and Cavanilles as rugged and dry-farmed. The earliest traces of human presence correspond to cave paintings from the Magdalenian to the Mesolithic. Included among the hamlets of the territory of Morella after the Christian conquest of the city in 1233, it passed in 1234 to the Order of the Temple and, after its dissolution, returned to depend on Morella. It waged a long struggle for independence that it did not achieve until 1691, when Charles II granted it the title of town. Until 1916 it was simply called Portell, and since then Portell de Morella. It preserves the ruins of a castle connected to its bell tower.
