What to see and do in Montroi/Montroy

Montroi
Village
A municipality in La Ribera Alta, in the province of Valencia, situated in the centre of the Vall dels Alcalans, between Montserrat and Real, separated from the latter by the Magre River. Although it is thought to be older, there is evidence of settlement from Muslim times; in 1238 James I granted the village, in the Llibre del Repartiment, to the knight Rodoviens de Lizana, and in 1307 the Templar master Pedro Soler had it repopulated. Of its castle, ceded to the Hospitallers in 1279, only the keep survives. Its beehives make use of the citrus blossom and the rosemary and thyme of the hills, a tradition that gave rise to the town's Valencian honey museum. The expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609 left the municipality almost depopulated; it now has 3,792 inhabitants (INE, 2025).
Castle of Montroi
Monument
An old fortress ceded to the Hospitallers in 1279, situated in the centre of the so-called Vall d'Alcalà; of its original buildings only the keep survives. Of Muslim origin, from the 13th century, the tower is 12 metres high, is built of rammed earth and consists of two storeys with windows and an upper terrace. It formed part of an old castle of which only the tower and some wall remains survive today; its state of preservation is poor, almost in ruins, despite several attempts at renovation and restoration over time.
MUVAMEL, Valencian Honey Museum
Curiosity
The Valencian Museum of Honey (MUVAMEL) is a museum dedicated to beekeeping, located in Montroi, barely twenty minutes from Valencia by motorway. It was founded on the initiative of the town council in 2013 and has been part of the Network of Local Ethnological Museums since 2017. It occupies 358 m² on the ground floor of the municipal Multi-purpose Building. With an educational approach, its permanent exhibition explains the background of modern beekeeping, the morphology, taxonomy and communication of bees, and it also has an audiovisual room, workshops and a shop selling bee products. It reflects Montroy's strong beekeeping tradition, where one in three inhabitants is involved in the harvesting, production or marketing of honey.
Honey of the Vall dels Alcalans
Food and drink
The apiaries of the valley make use of the orange blossom flowering of the citrus groves and the rosemary and thyme of the hills. The area's beekeeping tradition gave rise to the creation in the town of a museum devoted to honey and to the trades that surround it.
