What to see and do in Llombai

Llombai
Village
Llombai is a municipality of the Ribera Alta, in the province of Valencia, situated in the valley of the river Magro at the foot of the Cretaceous massif of the Caroche, with 2,791 inhabitants. Its origin goes back to an Iberian settlement of the Edetani tribe, probably dependent on the nearby Kili, which the Romans renamed Lumbardium. Charles I granted its marquisate to Francisco de Borja, who founded a Dominican convent here in 1545 devoted to preaching among the Moriscos of the valley. Its Aledua castle, from the late 12th century, passed in 1494 into the possession of the dukes of Gandía. To the north of the town is the Cueva de las Maravillas, with abundant stalactites and stalagmites, in whose surroundings remains of the Valencian Bronze Age have been documented.
Castle of Aledua
Monument
An Islamic fortress probably built in the late 12th century on a hillock of the Sierra de Alèdua, on the left bank of the river Magre, in the deserted site of Aledua, in the municipal district of Llombai. It is the last vestige of the old Andalusi alquería, abandoned with the expulsion of the moriscos in 1609. Rectangular in plan, it preserves at its centre an almost square tower (7.3 by 7.3 metres), with three storeys and a basement, built of rammed earth over masonry, reaching 16.5 metres; it closely resembles other Islamic towers in the area, such as the Mussa tower of Benifaió. In 1494 the barony was sold to Juan de Borja, first Duke of Gandía, and passed into that family's estate. It is now abandoned; the town council bought the tower in 2020 for 200,000 euros for its restoration.
Francisco de Borja, Marquis of Llombai
Historical milestone
Carlos I granted the marquisate to Francisco de Borja, who founded here in 1545 a Dominican convent intended for preaching among the Moriscos of the valley. Its church of Santa Cruz is considered the last example of Valencian rural Gothic.
