What to see and do in Picassent

Picassent
Village
Picassent is a municipality in L'Horta Sud, in the Valencia metropolitan area, whose territory ranges between 20 and 279 metres in altitude, in the transition between the coastal plain of the Albufera and the interior mountain ranges to the west. The Espioca tower, in the hamlet of the same name, is of Muslim origin and was built in the 11th century as part of Valencia's defensive system; Picassent itself and Millerola were also originally Muslim alquerías. From the old Islamic Picassent a small castle remained, which after the Christian conquest became a manorial residence, along with a wall that ran through several streets of the centre; both were demolished in the first half of the 19th century. The neoclassical hermitage of the Mare de Déu de Vallivana was built in 1738.

It has a rectangular floor plan, with a base of 4.95 by 5.6 metres, and its interior is divided into four floors; stone and mortar were used in its construction. It is well preserved and is protected by the Decree of 22 April 1949 and Law 16/1985 on Spanish Historical Heritage.

Hermitage of la Mare de Déu de Vallivana
Monument
A neoclassical hermitage situated on the Plaza de la Ermita in Picassent (Valencia), recognizable by its dome covered in blue and white glazed tile, one of the landmarks of the municipal landscape and a Bien de Relevancia Local. Its façade, a tall two-tier frontispiece crowned by a cross, bears the inscription "Ermita de Nª Sª de Vallivana" and, above it, a tiled altarpiece depicting the Assumption of the Virgin amid cherubim and seraphim, remade after the war of 1936. The interior, from the first half of the 18th century, has a Greek-cross plan with a dome over the crossing; the altar, from 1947, is neo-Baroque. The transept preserves the memory of the procession of the Vallivana held in 1738 to ward off an epidemic, the origin of the patron saint's pilgrimage that still reaches the hermitage today.

Food and drink
The district brings together one of the largest extents of orange and mandarin trees in the province, with staggered varieties that are picked from October to May. The packing warehouses of the town handle a good part of the fruit of the neighbouring comarcas.
