Catadau
Village
Catadau is a municipality in the Valencian Ribera Alta, at 94 metres above sea level, set in the Vall dels Alcalans, on the right bank of the Magre River, which forms its eastern boundary. Its territory, generally flat, rises to the southwest at the hills of Matamón and to the west at the Sierra del Caballón, where it reaches 760 metres. The name, of Visigothic origin, would combine cat, “property”, with the name of its former owner, Daur. In the Cueva de Avellaneda, now-lost prehistoric remains were found: skulls, pottery and Roman coins. In 1530 Charles V granted Francisco de Borja, 4th Duke of Gandía, the title of Marquis of Llombai, whose territory included Catadau; and in 1914 the Centro Católico Social was built, the work of architect Enrique Viedma Vidal in Valencian Art Nouveau style.

Parish church of Catadau, listed as an Asset of Local Relevance within the historical heritage of the Comunitat Valenciana. Dedicated to San Pedro Apóstol, in 1535 it was designated a rectory for moriscos; the original church was built on the site of an old mosque, and in 1730 a new one was built, destroyed in 1936. It stands next to the town hall, at the start of Calle Mayor.
