Real
Village
Real, formerly Real de Montroy, is one of the smallest municipalities in La Ribera Alta, with about 2,500 inhabitants; the Magre River embraces it in a meander that irrigates its market gardens, and only a bridge separates it from neighbouring Montroy. Its name probably comes from the Arabic rahal or raal, “alluvial terrace” or “river floodplain”, as explained by the naturalist Cavanilles. A local legend has it founded by residents of Montroy who crossed the river, but the remains found, predating the Muslim presence, indicate that Real is older; it belonged to a county, while Montroy belonged to the Order of Montesa. It lives from mixed dry and irrigated farming. It preserves the Gothic church of San Pedro Apóstol, from 1587, and the ruins of the Castell dels Alcalans, a fortress of Muslim times.
