What to see and do in Montserrat

Montserrat
Village
Montserrat is a municipality of the Ribera Alta, in the province of Valencia, situated at the foot of the Castellet mountain, in the Vall dels Alcalans, near the river Magro, which separates its term from that of Montroy before flowing into the Júcar. It was an Islamic alqueria and fortress until James I handed it over in 1240 to Eximén de Tovià; the lordship passed in 1307 to the Pérez de Zapata family, who held it until 1763. The historic centre retains narrow streets of Islamic origin from the 11th century, and the Castell dels Alcalans stands in the valley. Its old grain storehouse has been converted into a public library. With more than 9,000 inhabitants, it suffered severe damage in the DANA storm of October 2024.
Agricultural granary of Montserrat
Monument
An old grain-storage building in Montserrat, converted into a public library and one of the most representative monuments in the municipality. The agricultural pósito was built in 1792 to store cereal and, after its renovation, now houses the Public Library, which holds more than ten thousand volumes.
Castle of els Alcalans
Monument
The castle dels Alcalans was a medieval fortification located in the municipal district of Montserrat (Valencia), in the comarca of the Ribera Alta, near the river Magre, in the Alcalans valley to which it gives its name. It occupies a southern hill of the Sierra Falaguera, near the Cova Fumà, on the boundary with Llombai. Built of limestone, it had a double wall and two enclosures: an upper one, military and residential, with a courtyard and cistern, and a lower one with a large albacar and a lists yard defended by an outer wall of which remains up to three metres high are still preserved. Its first construction phase dates back to the 11th century, associated with the Taifa of Valencia, and a second, from the 12th and 13th centuries, from the Almohad period. It is listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest and is in ruins.
