L'Alcúdia
Village
L'Alcúdia is a municipality of the La Ribera Alta comarca, in the province of Valencia, 35 kilometres from the capital, with 12,587 inhabitants, and home to the Ibero-Roman archaeological site of L'Alcúdia. Its name is an Arabic toponym meaning 'the hill pass'; for centuries it was known as Alcudia de Carlet, and did not recover the Valencian form l'Alcúdia until 1982. The municipal term, irrigated by the Acequia Real del Júcar, extends flat next to the river Magro, and is divided by the municipality of Guadasuar into two sectors, the second of which corresponds to the former term of Montortal, annexed in 1842. Its origin goes back to an Andalusi alqueria that James I gave in 1238 to Pedro de Montagut, who in 1252 granted a settlement charter to 54 Christian resettlers.

Settlement charter of L'Alcúdia of 1252
Historical milestone
Jaume I handed the place to Pedro de Montagut in 1238 and he granted on 17 January 1252 a charter of settlement to fifty-four Christian colonists. That document fixed the distribution of the lands and the obligations of the new settlers.
Rojo Brillante persimmon
Food and drink
Persimmon variety selected in the comarca in the middle of the twentieth century, of firm flesh and without seeds when the tannin is removed. Its cultivation transformed the agricultural landscape of the Ribera and today it is exported across half of Europe from the local warehouses.
