What to see and do in Carlet

Carlet
Village
Carlet is a municipality of the Ribera Alta comarca, in the province of Valencia, part of the second ring of the metropolitan area of the capital, 34 kilometres away. It sits on the flood plain of the river Magro, between the Matamón hill to the west and the El Pla plain to the east. It was a lordship with a mostly Morisco population, raised to a county in 1604; the expulsion of 1609 left it empty, and it had to be repopulated the following year with Christian families brought from other comarcas. Its town centre retains an orthogonal, chessboard-like layout, with streets recalling the cardo and decumanus of Roman foundations, which spread through Aragonese and Valencian lands from the model of Jaca, as also happened in Villarreal de Castellón.
Festivities of Carlet
Activity
Carlet celebrates San Bernardo Mártir on 23 July, with a pilgrimage, and has Santa María de Carlet as its patron saint; its main festival is concentrated in the second week of September, with the traditional verbena del Mantón de Manila.
County of Carlet and the 1610 resettlement
Historical milestone
The title of count of Carlet was created in 1604 over a seigneury of mainly Morisco population. After the expulsion, the district was left empty and it had to be resettled in 1610 with Christian families brought from other comarcas of the kingdom.
