Benimodo
Village
Benimodo is a municipality in La Ribera Alta, in the province of Valencia, situated at 42 metres above sea level in the centre of the comarca. Its name comes from the Arabic banī Mawdūd, “sons of Mawdūd”, and its origin is Islamic, documented at the end of the 13th century as Benimòdol, when James I handed it over, together with other alquerías, to the lordship of Carlet. It later passed through several lineages until Gonçal de Castellví acquired it in 1375. During the revolt of the Germanías, the population was sacked in 1522 by the agermanats. Its church of the Purísima Concepción began to be built in 1574 on an old mosque; destroyed in 1936, it was later rebuilt. 14 kilometres away lies the site of the Ullals del Riu Verd, where the river rises.

Built in the 18th century over an earlier church which had in turn been raised over a former mosque, it preserves a carved 18th-century crucifix and paintings by the local artist Rafael Armengol Machí.
