What to see and do in Guadassuar

Guadassuar
Village
Guadassuar is a municipality of the La Ribera Alta comarca, in the province of Valencia, irrigated by the Acequia Real del Júcar and the river Magro. Its name comes from the Arabic wadi suar, the flattest part of the river. After the surrender of Alzira in 1242 it passed into Christian hands; repopulated in 1270 with 39 Christians from Catalonia, Aragon and Navarre, in 1581 Philip II granted it municipal independence with the title of Real Universidad. Its Renaissance church, begun in 1560, concealed beneath the Baroque ornamentation of the vaults sixteen polychrome Gothic dragons, the fourth such group documented in the Comunitat Valenciana. Now devoted to citrus fruits and persimmons, its ovens prepare panquemao, a soft glazed bun, for Easter and the festivals. It has 6,039 inhabitants.
