What to see and do in Alzira

Alzira
Village
Alzira is the capital and most populous municipality of the Ribera Alta del Júcar comarca, in the province of Valencia, with 48,236 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its name comes from the Arabic al-yazira, the island, from the full name yazirat suqar, the island of the Júcar. The municipal term lies mostly on the right bank of the river Júcar, which was navigable as far as Alzira for small-tonnage vessels until the 16th century, and it retains important remains of its medieval wall. The Mediterranean climate brings torrential autumn rains that have caused historic floods, such as the Tous disaster of 1982, after which the new Tous dam was built in 1996 to regulate the river's flow.
Medieval wall of Alzira
Monument
A wide, well-preserved stretch of the wall that surrounded the urban centre of Alzira (La Ribera Alta, Valencia), the comarca's capital. The walled enclosure, of Islamic origin, was built between the 9th and 10th centuries to protect the ancient Al-Yazira or Algezira (“the island”), surrounded by the Júcar River, whose strategic crossing it controlled. Throughout its history it suffered attacks from El Cid and the Reconquest, as well as damage during the Morisco revolts and the war of the Germanías. The historic quarter it protected, known as la Vila, is today undergoing a constant process of restoration.
Monastery of la Murta
Monument
The monastery of Santa María de la Murta, in the valley of the same name near Alzira (Valencia), is a former Hieronymite monastery from the 14th-15th centuries that was a pilgrimage centre for royalty and the aristocracy. Its origins go back to an earlier monastery founded in the year 568 by Saint Donatus, destroyed after the Arab invasion; the present community was born in 1376, when Pope Gregory XI granted the founding bull to a group of hermits protected by the knight Arnau de Serra. The works, in Valencian Gothic style, began in 1401 under the protection of the monastery of Cotalba, and in 1410 it received a visit from Saint Vincent Ferrer. Acquired by the Alzira Town Council in 1989, it has been restored since 1995 as a historic garden and museum space within its protected natural area.
Festivities of Alzira
Activity
Alzira celebrates its patronal festival in July, in honour of Sant Bernat, Maria and Gràcia, and in September, dedicated to the Mare de Déu de Lluc, with traditional guild dances such as that of el Jardí, la Farina and la Carxofa, and a re-enactment of the finding of the Virgin.
Capitulation of Alzira before Jaume I
Historical milestone
The Islamic town of al-Yazira, set on an island in the Xúquer, capitulated on 30 December 1242. It controlled the only reliable crossing of the river and that is why the king said on taking it that with it he closed and opened the kingdom, as the chronicles record.
Abdication of Jaume I in Alzira
Historical milestone
Already ill, the conqueror king renounced the crown in this town in favour of his son Pere and divided his domains among his heirs. He died a few days later, in July 1276, and his body was moved later to the monastery of Poblet.
