What to see and do in Algemesí

Algemesí
Village
Algemesí is a municipality of La Ribera Alta, in the province of Valencia, with 28,306 inhabitants (INE 2025), situated next to the mouth of the Magro in the Júcar, with part of its term within the Albufera natural park. Urban growth has joined its centre with those of Alzira and Carcaixent, forming a conurbation of close to 95,000 inhabitants, the second largest in the province. The use of the waters of the Acequia Real del Júcar introduced irrigation for mulberry and rice, crops that citrus fruits displaced in the 19th and 20th centuries. Of Islamic foundation as an alqueria, its name comes from the Arabic al-jabbāzīn, the bakers, already documented in the Llibre del Repartiment (1244-1249). It is famous for the Muixeranga, declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
Muixeranga d'Algemesí
Activity
The Muixeranga of Algemesí is one of the festive elements of the festivities of the Virgin of Salud, celebrated since 1723 on 7 and 8 September, and declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco in 2011, together with the rest of the festival's dances. According to local tradition, the image of the Virgin was found in the trunk of a mulberry tree and, taken three times to Alzira, returned just as many times in an inexplicable way to Algemesí, a legend that gives rise to the festival. The processions continue until dawn during the Volta General on the 8th, and bring together, alongside the muixeranga, els misteris i els martiris or la carxofa. The name may derive from the Arabic mochain (masked) or from the old mojigangas, troupes of disguised performers from traditional processions.
Separation of Algemesí from the town of Alzira
Historical milestone
The place, whose Arabic name alludes to the bakers, depended on Alzira until Felipe II granted it in 1574 the status of universidad with its own jurisdiction. The irrigation of the Séquia Reial had earlier multiplied its population and its harvests.

Activity
The September festivity, with its dances, mystery plays and human towers going through the streets, was inscribed in 2011 on the representative list of Unesco's intangible cultural heritage. Hundreds of residents organised by neighbourhood take part.
