What to see and do in Alginet

Alginet
Village
Alginet, whose name comes from the Arabic al-ǧinnāt, 'the orchards' or 'the irrigated fields', is a municipality of the Ribera Alta, in the province of Valencia, with 14,844 inhabitants, in the second ring of the metropolitan area of the capital. Of Muslim foundation, King James I handed it over in 1250 to Pere García Ferrera, and after passing through several lords it came into the hands of the Cabanilles family, of whom the town retains part of the castle, without towers or moats; the residents litigated with their lords in 1609 over the use of irrigation water. Its Church of San Antonio Abad also dates from that period, from the late 17th century, with a central dome in Valencian Mudéjar style. Next to the castle still stand the modernist slaughterhouse and market, the work of Carlos Carbonell Pañella from 1905.
Church of San Antonio Abad de Alginet
Monument
The parish church of San Antonio Abad stands on the plaza del País Valenciano in Alginet and is considered a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), although without ministerial listing. It was built between 1654 and 1699 from the remains of an earlier 14th-century parish, dated by different authors to around 1330 or 1375, while the bell tower and the Chapel of the Communion were added in the 18th century. The three-naved temple has, in the central nave, a crossing topped by a dome of Valencian-style Arab brick; the interior, with rococo ornamentation, contrasts with the plainness of the façade. Beside the church stands a tower of square plan.
Modernist slaughterhouse and market of Alginet
Historical milestone
The architect Carlos Carbonell Pañella designed in 1905 these two public facilities of brick and iron, an example of modernism applied to urban hygiene in an agricultural municipality. They still stand beside the castle of the Cabanyelles.
