L'Alcúdia de Crespins
Village
L'Alcúdia de Crespins is a municipality of the Costera comarca, in the province of Valencia, situated in the valley of the río Cáñoles, at the entrance to the valley of Montesa and facing the sierra de Vernisa. It arose in 1240 on a Muslim hamlet, the Torre de la Alcudia, which in 1353 passed to Berenguer de Llombay and was later acquired by the Crespí family, of Girona origin, who gave it their name; Ausiàs Crespí had the Palacio de los Crespí built. Its parish church, dedicated to Saint Onuphrius, was damaged by the 1748 earthquake. The Riu dels Sants rises on the outskirts of the village over a Cretaceous fossil site.
River of els Sants
Nature
The riu dels Sants is a watercourse that rises at the karstic spring of the Font dels Sants, at the spot known as el Naixement, 165 metres above sea level, one of the main outlets of the carbonate platform of the Caroig massif. It crosses l'Alcúdia de Crespins and Canals, in the comarca of La Costera, and flows into the left bank of the río Cañoles, after six kilometres through a valley cut into tufaceous rock. Today it is practically dry for most of the year, although in certain periods it is drawn off through wells for irrigating the traditional market gardens. It was formerly called río de Sant Julià; its present name comes from a hermitage dedicated to the Sants de la Pedra, patrons of farmers, destroyed by the earthquake of 1748.
Festivities of l'Alcúdia de Crespins
Activity
The patronal feasts of L'Alcúdia de Crespins are dedicated to the Santísimo Cristo del Calvario (the Most Holy Christ of the Calvary) and the Divina Aurora (Divine Dawn), and are held from the first Sunday of September for a week. The municipality also keeps another patronal feast, on 10 June, in honour of San Onofre.

Hermitage of el Cristo del Calvario de L'Alcúdia de Crespins
Monument
Hermitage built in 1774 at the request of Cristóbal Crespí de Valldaura, Count of Orgaz; ransacked and used as barracks during the Peninsular War, it was rebuilt in the early 19th century and enlarged in 1967. A 2010 restoration brought to light projectiles embedded in its façade, fired in August 1936 at the outbreak of the Civil War.
Source of the Río de los Santos
Nature
Headwater spring of the río de los Santos, a tributary of the Cáñoles, which emerges at the karstic resurgence of the Fuente de los Santos, in the area known as el Nacimiento, at 165 metres above sea level, one of the main natural outlets of the Macizo del Caroche. From there it runs for about 6 kilometres through a valley cut into tufaceous rock, crossing Alcúdia de Crespins and Canals before flowing into the Cáñoles; although today it remains almost dry for most of the year, except when tapped through wells to irrigate the traditional market gardens, its natural flow would be around 1000 litres per second, very regular as it is a karstic spring. The botanist Cavanilles already described it as «la más copiosa [fuente] del reino».
Founding of L'Alcúdia de Crespins in 1240
