Vallés
Village
Vallés is the smallest municipality of the district of La Costera, in the province of Valencia, crossed by the river Cáñoles, whose sediments have left fertile irrigated land with orange trees, market-garden crops and maize; it has 161 inhabitants today. It began as a small Arab alquería next to the mill on the Cáñoles and, according to tradition, served as a parade ground for James I during the siege of Xàtiva of 1243-1244. After the expulsion of the Moriscos it remained depopulated until Bernat Sanz granted a resettlement charter on 16 July 1611 to old Christians from Xàtiva. The village preserves the Palacio de los Sanz, of Gothic architecture and former seat of the marquisate of Mascarell, and celebrates its patronal festivals in honour of San Juan Bautista from 24 June.
