What to see and do in Torrent

Torrent
Village
Torrent is the most populous municipality in the comarca of L'Horta Sud, in the Valencia metropolitan area, with 90,928 inhabitants, located 8 kilometres from the capital and at the foot of the Vedat de Torrent hill. It is home to the Museo Comarcal de L'Horta Sud and the Mancomunidad Intermunicipal de la Huerta Sur. Its name, of possible Latin origin in turritus, "towered", or torrens, "impetuous", first appears in a document by James I from 1232; it was officially Torrente in Castilian until, in 1979, a decree of the Council of Ministers restored the Valencian form Torrent. The municipality, of gentle relief, is crossed by the Torrent ravine, which flows into the Albufera lake and which, during episodes of heavy rain, increases the municipality's vulnerability to flooding.
Regional Museum of L'Horta Sud
Monument
The Josep Ferrís March Regional Museum of L'Horta Sud, in Torrent (Valencia), has as its purpose the conservation, research and dissemination of the region's cultural heritage. It occupies the Casa de l'Estudiant de Boqueta, a farmhouse built in 1904 and inhabited until the 1980s, whose layout allows visitors to learn about the life of a family tied to the land: the dwelling, the agricultural work area next to the pen and, on the upper floor, the produce store. Restored by the Mancomunitat de L'Horta Sud, it opened as a museum in 2000 and its exhibition hall opened three years later; its collection brings together household goods, farming tools and craft implements. It is dedicated to Josep Ferrís March, director of the Caixa d'Estalvis de Torrent.
Festivities of Torrent
Activity
The festivities of Torrent (Valencia) are the patronal festivities in honour of Saint Abdon and Saint Sennen, held from 23 to 30 July, coinciding with the celebration of Moors and Christians, which since 1990 has gained great importance in the municipality. Its central event is the Gran Entrada, with 24 filaes and comparsas bringing together more than a thousand participants and around ten thousand spectators each summer. The programme also includes the pregón and the trabucà, at which the parlament is presented.
Parish Museum of the Assumption of Torrent
Monument
Torrent's parish museum, linked to the church of the Assumption, founded after the 13th-century Christian conquest and rebuilt and expanded between the 16th and 18th centuries after being destroyed during the Germanías revolt of 1521. It preserves liturgical ornaments from 1590 and three canvases by the painter Juan Ribalta, dated 1773, as well as a Gothic carving of the Virgin of Pópul, one of the oldest pieces in the collection.
Tower of el Castillo de Torrent
Monument
A keep some 22 metres high, all that remains of a fortress of Muslim origin from the 12th century that James I handed over to the Order of the Hospital in 1232; it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2001.
Genaro Palau, painter of Torrent
Curiosity
Landscape painter and bullfighting poster artist (1866-1933) born in Torrent, trained at the Real Academia de San Carlos alongside Joaquín Sorolla.
Barranc del Poyo through l'Horta Sud
Nature
A seasonal watercourse that rises next to Torrent and crosses several municipalities of l'Horta Sud on its way to l'Albufera, a stream that has historically shaped the comarca's farming landscape.
Commandery of the Order of St John of the Hospital
Historical milestone
After the conquest, the Hospitaller order received the town and resettled it with fifty Christian families to whom it gave houses and lands. It governed the district for almost six centuries, until 1807, and left the castle tower as the seat of its commander.
Easter mona at the Vedat
Food and drink
Bun of flour, egg and sugar with a boiled egg set into it that is eaten in the open air on Easter Mondays. The pine wood of El Vedat has for generations been the place where the families of the comarca go up to picnic and to fly kites.
