What to see and do in Quart de Poblet

Quart de Poblet
Village
Quart de Poblet is a municipality in L'Horta Sud, seven kilometres from the centre of Valencia, whose name comes from the Latin quartum miliarium, from the distance that separated it from the city. Here, as recorded in the Cantar de Mio Cid, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar defeated in 1094 the Almoravid army that was attempting to retake Valencia; from that Arab period a cistern survives, the only structure that remains, along with the remains of a Roman aqueduct and bridge. After the Reconquest, James I granted the castle and the town in 1244 to the Priory of the Hospital of San Vicente de la Roqueta, and in 1287 Alfonso II placed them under the jurisdiction of the Monastery of Santa María de Poblet, of the Cistercian order, from which the town would later take its name. It now has close to 27,000 inhabitants.

Battle of Cuart
Historical milestone
On the plains beside the Turia, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar defeated in 1094 the Almoravid army that had come to recover Valencia shortly after he took the city. The victory allowed him to keep it until his death and the municipality commemorates it every September.
Séquia de Favara
Historical milestone
The séquia de Favara is one of the eight historic irrigation channels of l'Horta de València under the jurisdiction of the Tribunal de las Aguas, of Muslim origin predating the Christian conquest of 1238; a written mention of it already dates from 1094. It rises in the río Turia, in the municipal area of Quart de Poblet, and irrigates the orchards and fields on the right bank of the old riverbed as far as the séquia de Rovella and the rice fields of the Albufera. Its course was seriously altered by the works of the Plan Sur, which divided the irrigated land between north and south of the new riverbed; the historic weir of the Repartiment, today vanished beneath the rubble of the old riverbed, was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 7 October 2004.
