What to see and do in Xirivella

Xirivella
Village
Xirivella is a municipality in L'Horta Sud, in the Valencia metropolitan area, with 32,093 inhabitants, in the fertile Valencian market gardens, divided by the bed of the Turia, built after the 1957 flood, into the historic centre and the La Luz district. Its name probably derives from the Latin Silvella, small wood, transmitted through Arabic; under Muslim rule it was an agricultural settlement that introduced the cultivation of mulberry trees for silk and improved the Roman irrigation system with the Benàger and Faitanar channels, whose layout is preserved along a route of eleven historic alquerías. After the conquest by James I it was granted to the Order of Calatrava. Its hermitage of the Mare de Déu de la Salut, from 1604, marks the spot where tradition places the finding of the Virgin in a well.
Festivities of Xirivella
Activity
The hermitage of the Mare de Déu de la Salut of Xirivella, founded in 1604, marks the spot where tradition places the finding of the patroness's image in a well beneath the crypt. The legend, linked to the time of the Reconquista, tells how six potters found the image after hearing bells underground, and that one of them, who mocked her devotion, went blind and regained his sight upon repenting, giving rise to the invocation of the Salud (Health). Listed as a Bien de Relevancia Local (a local-level heritage protection designation), the hermitage is the centre of Xirivella's patronal festivities, whose main day is 8 September, when people come from all over the region.
Hermitage of la Mare de Déu de la Salut de Xirivella
Monument
A hermitage built in 1604 in Xirivella to mark the place where, according to tradition, the image of the Mare de Déu de la Salut was found, hidden beneath a bell buried in an olive grove; the finding is placed towards the end of the 16th century or the beginning of the 17th. The parish church that houses it, in the centre of the town, has become one of the identifying symbols of Xirivella, whose devotion has been kept from parents to children for more than four centuries despite the losses suffered by the parish archive, including the looting and fire of 1936. Festivities are held in its honour every 8 September. It is protected as an asset of local interest.
