Picanya
Village
Picanya, officially named in Valencian, is a municipality in L'Horta Sud, in the province of Valencia, with 11,901 inhabitants, forming a conurbation with neighbouring Paiporta. A Muslim alquería granted by James I to the Order of the Hospital together with that of Vistabella, it was legally founded in 1248, along with Torrent, by a settlement charter from that order; an Iberian exalipter found within its territory, a replica of which is displayed in the municipal library, points to a much older settlement. It was the first Valencian town to request the Statute of Autonomy, in 1977. In late October 2024 it suffered severe flooding from the cold drop, with bridges and homes destroyed; the municipality has since undertaken reconstruction works, including a memorial, the Puente de la Memoria.

Curiosity
Ten years after the conquest of Valencia, the Order of the Hospital of Sant Joan granted this charter of settlement, which legally founded Picanya together with Torrent.
