What to see and do in Aldaia

Aldaia
Village
Aldaia is a municipality in the comarca of L'Horta Sud, in the Valencia metropolitan area, with 34,630 inhabitants; its name comes from the Arabic al-daia, the farm or the hamlet. It was an Andalusi alquería that, after the Reconquest, passed to the monastery of San Vicente de la Roqueta, dependent on the Benedictine monks of Poblet, who received a settlement charter from King Alfonso IV of Aragon in 1334 and governed the parish until the early 19th century. It is home to the Fan Museum and to a museum devoted to the weaving of dwarf palm leaves, a traditional craft, and it preserves the church of the Annunciation, from the late 15th century, remodelled with Churrigueresque elements in the 18th century. In late October 2024 the municipality suffered severe flooding from the dana.
Museum of el Abanico de Aldaia
Monument
The Fan Museum of Aldaia brings together an ethnological and artistic display of the fans manufactured in the town, whose production characterised the village during the 19th and 20th centuries; some companies that still make them survive today. The collection is displayed in the Casa de la Llotgeta, a 16th-century building.
Festivities of Aldaia
Activity
Aldaia celebrates a festive calendar spread widely across the year: San Antonio Abad (17 January), the Cristo de los Necesitados (27 July-6 August, main festival), the Virgen de la Victoria, San Roque, the Virgen de la Saleta, San Miguel and San Rafael, and the Virgen del Pilar (11-12 October).
Church of la Anunciación de Aldaia
Monument
The Church of the Annunciation of Aldaia, in L'Horta Sud (Valencia), was built at the end of the 15th century; the later reforms, additions and decorations, especially those of the 18th century in Churrigueresque style, do not manage to hide the Gothic features of the original temple, visible especially in the ribs of the main nave, which measures 16 metres in length, 15 in height and 9 in width. The Chapel of the Communion dates from the 19th century, and in the chapel of Saint Stephen a triptych by the Renaissance painter fray Nicolás Borrás was preserved.
Hermitage of la Mare de Déu de la Saleta d'Aldaia
Monument
The hermitage of the Mare de Déu de la Saleta stands at the junction of Ventall, Verge del Remei and Hernán Cortés streets, in Aldaia, and is listed as an Asset of Local Relevance, together with the hermitage of San Miguel, among the protected religious buildings of the town's heritage. Its dedication recalls a Marian apparition of 1846 at La Saleta, a mountain in the Alps, and the church was built in 1887. It has a rectangular floor plan, with a sacristy attached at the rear and an enclosed terrace in front of the façade, topped by a bell-gable with a bell. Inside, covered by a barrel vault, it preserves two ceramic altarpieces, from 1960 and 2000, depicting the apparition of the Virgin.
Casa de la Llotgeta - Palmito Museum of Aldaia
Curiosity
Museum of the Palmito of Aldaia (MUPA), housed in the Casa de la Llotgeta, a building dating from between the 16th and 17th centuries located at the crossing of Iglesia and Mayor streets. It was originally a manor house of the counts of Nules, an example of Valencian Renaissance architecture, with rammed-earth load-bearing walls and an interior courtyard formed by two main wings and a perpendicular one. Its most distinctive feature is the loggia —hence the name Llotgeta— with twelve round brick arches without columns, now enclosed with a metal and glass structure. Half-ruined, it was acquired and restored by the town council with an investment of more than a million and a half euros, and opened as a museum dedicated to the traditional weaving of the palmito on 17 December 2010.
