What to see and do in Alaquàs

Alaquàs
Village
Alaquàs is a municipality in the comarca of L'Horta Sud, in the Valencia metropolitan area, about seven kilometres west of the capital, whose urban centre forms a conurbation with that of Aldaia. It has 30,166 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its name comes from the Arabic al-aqwas, the arches. The settlement originates from a Muslim alquería that James I subdued in 1238; the lordship passed through several families until, in 1557, Philip II created the county of Alacuás, whose holder, Luis Pardo de la Casta, had the castle of Alaquàs built at the end of that century over the old Muslim fortification, a national monument and a symbol of identity for the town. In late October 2024 the municipality suffered severe flooding from the cold drop that affected the province of Valencia.
Castle of Alaquàs
Monument
A palace-castle also known as the palau dels Aguilar, one of the noble mansions of the period of feudal decline in the 16th century that already announces the Renaissance in important architectural elements. Residential in character, it preserves magnificent coffered ceilings in its rooms, tilework and ornamental features, but lacks the exterior signs of strength and defence usual in buildings of that type. It was declared a Monumento Histórico y Artístico (a former heritage-protection category, precursor of the BIC) on 21 April 1918 and a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 1 December 1999, and it is one of the most important buildings in the comarca of L'Horta Sud.
Festivities of Alaquàs
Activity
Alaquàs celebrates its patron saint San Francisco de Paula with the Fiesta del Porrat, and its patron saint, the Virgen del Olivar, on 8 and 9 September, with the Canto de la Alcachofa and the Cordá in honour of the Cristo de la Buena Muerte.
County of Alaquàs
Historical milestone
The place received the title of villa in 1520 and Felipe II erected it into a county in 1557 in favour of the Pardo de la Casta. The first count, Lluís Pardo de la Casta, raised the Renaissance castle-palace that today presides over the centre of the municipality.
House of Spiritual Exercises of La Purísima
Historical milestone
Modernist brick building raised at the beginning of the twentieth century as a house of spiritual retreats. During the Civil War it was fitted out as a women's prison and later recovered welfare and cultural uses for the municipality.
