What to see and do in Paiporta

Paiporta
Village
Paiporta is a municipality in the comarca of L'Horta Sud, in the province of Valencia, formed by the union of several settlements, among them Cotelles and Racó, already recorded in the Llibre del Repartiment of 1238. Its original name was San Jorge, which suggests it was founded after the conquest of Valencia by James I; hence comes the dedication of its church, from 1754. The Chiva ravine divides the town centre in two. Among its illustrious residents, Vicente Doménech, El Palleter, a figure of the Peninsular War, stands out. It is home to the Museo de la Rajoleria, in a brick factory refurbished in 2000; the overflow of the Poyo ravine on 29 October 2024 devastated the municipality, with more than seventy deaths in Paiporta alone.
La Rajoleria de Paiporta
Monument
The former brick and tile factory of Paiporta, converted into an ethnological museum dedicated to the traditional ceramics industry. Housed in the old factory known as the Rajolar de Bauset, the museum opened on 5 October 2000 and the following year became part of the Sistema Valencià de Museus; since 2017 it has also belonged to the Network of Local Ethnological Museums coordinated by the Museu Valencià d'Etnologia. It has three spaces: the permanent gallery, located in the old Hoffmann kilns, dedicated to society and brick production in Paiporta; a temporary gallery on the first floor, with its own collections and those of other institutions; and a glazed annexe room in the gardens, which evokes the old brick-drying sheds.
Church of San Jorge Mártir de Paiporta
Monument
A parish church opened in 1754 in a style transitional between Baroque and Neoclassical, built to replace the earlier church, which was in danger of collapse.
Flood of the Poyo ravine
Historical milestone
The overflowing of the Poyo ravine on the afternoon of 29 October 2024 devastated the municipalities of the south of the metropolitan area and left more than two hundred fatalities in the province. Paiporta was one of the points where the water reached its greatest height.
