What to see and do in Mislata

Mislata
Village
Mislata is a municipality in L'Horta Sud, in the province of Valencia, bordering the capital, with which it forms a continuous urban area, and one of the most densely populated in Spain, with 47,079 inhabitants (INE 2025) in barely 2.4 km². Its name may come from the Arabic manzil Aţā, "Atá's inn", from its function as a shelter on a road towards the interior, or from the late Latin Misculata, "mixed", from the mixing of the waters of the Turia and the irrigation channels, already existing in Roman times. It is part of the historic landscape of Valencia's market gardens, with the Turia's network of irrigation channels administered by the Water Tribunal, and it lies between the old and new beds of the river, on flat ground. Its urban centre, 29 metres above sea level, joins to the east with the districts of Soternes and La Luz.
Church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de Mislata
Monument
Built between 1704 and 1755 over an earlier 16th-century church, it stands on the site of a former mosque which, after the conquest, was turned into a hermitage dedicated to San Miguel.
Hermitage of San Miguel de Soternes
Monument
Known as the farmers' hermitage of Mislata, it was once surrounded by market gardens where popular pilgrimage festivals were held, a tradition that was lost when the crops disappeared.
Battle of Mislata
Historical milestone
The battle, fought on 9 December 1348 on the plain of Mislata, pitted the troops of Peter the Ceremonious, commanded by Lope de Luna, against the insurgents of the Valencian Union, a seigneurial movement that, like its Aragonese counterpart, defended its class privileges against the king. Despite the many casualties suffered, victory went to the monarch, who took the city of Valencia and had the insurgents executed, subjecting them besides to cruel punishments, such as forcing some to drink the molten bronze of the bell that had summoned the rebels' meetings. It was the decisive battle of the Wars of the Unions: the defeat ended the revolt, annulled the privileges of the unionists and consolidated royal authority over the cities of the kingdom.
Creu Coberta de Mislata
Historical milestone
The Creu de Mislata is a Gothic construction of the 14th and 15th centuries situated on the boundary of the municipal area of Mislata (Horta Sud) with Valencia. On the same site there had previously been another cross, torn down in 1411; the present reconstruction began on 28 March 1432. It served as a customs post for Valencia besides marking the boundary between the two areas, and the old Valencia-Madrid road used to pass by it. The ensemble comprises the cross, an octagonal pillar crowned by a capital with an eight-sided sculpture, four faces bearing the city's arms and four with reliefs of its saints, San Miguel, San Vicente, San José and the Virgin of the Desamparados; and the cuculla, a covering of Arab tile resting on four pillars. The original Gothic cross was torn down and replaced with another one in iron.
