What to see and do in Museros

Museros
Village
Museros is a municipality in the comarca of Huerta Norte (L'Horta Nord), in the province of Valencia, located 11 kilometres from the capital and only 2 from the coast, on a flat area of 12.45 square kilometres; it has 6,871 inhabitants. Of Muslim origin, which gave it its current name, its tower was conquered by James I in 1235 and later granted to the Order of Santiago, which gave it a founding charter under the fuero of Valencia in 1279. It also retains a Dominican fortified farmhouse from 1471 that served as a defensive stronghold during the Peninsular War. In its territory remains of several Roman rustic villas and traces of ancient water conduits have been found, evidence of continuous agricultural occupation from Roman times to the present-day Valencian huerta.
Festivities of Museros
Activity
The main festivities of Museros, in the Valencian comarca of L'Horta Nord, are dedicated to Saint Roch and are held on 16 August. Among the festivities, 14 August stands out, the main day dedicated to the fighting bull: the day begins in the morning with a running of the bulls, continues in the afternoon with the release of several bulls from important breeders, and culminates at night with the traditional toro embolado, organised each night of the bullfighting week by a different breeder. Local tradition also includes toros embolados and the release of young cows.
Parish Church of the Assumption of Museros
Monument
Parish church of Museros, in the Valencian comarca of Huerta Norte, completed in 1734, with a single nave and side chapels decorated with Valencian tiles. It is listed as Bien de Relevancia Local (a regional heritage-protection listing in the Comunitat Valenciana) under the Valencian Cultural Heritage Law. Next to the main façade stands a square-plan bell tower that preserves a set of bells characteristic of the comarca: the largest, from 1983, is dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption; the medium one, recast in 1969, honours Saint Roch, patron of the village; and the smallest dates from 1917.
Hermitage of San Roque de Museros
Monument
The hermitage of San Roque de Museros, a simply built structure in the style of the conquest-era churches, already existed in the 16th century, although it dates from 1542; it is listed as Bien de Relevancia Local (a regional heritage-protection listing in the Comunitat Valenciana). Its espadaña-style bell wall, of white-painted tile and decorated with paired Tuscan pilasters and two small obelisks at the sides, is a baroque work of the 18th century. It preserves a single bell, cast in 1944 and dedicated to the Holy Family.
Farmhouse of San Onofre of Museros
Monument
Dominican building from 1471 in Museros, which served as a defensive stronghold during the Peninsular War. It functioned as a convent of Dominican friars until the 18th century. From 1811 it played a prominent role in the war, as it was the redoubt from which the townspeople defended themselves against attacks by the troops of General Suchet; the structure was left in ruins after the battle, which forced the Dominican order to abandon Museros for good.
Conquest of the tower of Museros by James I
Curiosity
The tower of Museros was conquered by James I in 1235 and received its settlement charter in 1279 from the Order of Santiago. After the conquest, the tower was given to this military order, which granted the settlement charter under the fuero of Valencia that same year. In 1553 the Order of Santiago granted a new settlement charter to the municipality, although it kept the castle, the ovens and the church for itself. The conquest marked Museros' transition, whose name has its origin in the preceding centuries of Muslim rule, towards Christian resettlement.
Main Festivities of San Roque of Museros
Activity
The Fiestas Mayores of San Roque de Museros are the patronal festival of the municipality, in the comarca of L'Horta Nord, with embolado bulls and the release of young cows, and are among the most crowded processions in the comarca. They are held around 16 August, with the 14th as bull day: they begin with an encierro (bull run) and continue with the release of several bulls from prominent breeders and the traditional embolado bull, organised by a different cattle ranch each night of the bullfighting week. The following day a recortes competition is held with recortadores from the village, and the festival closes with a mobile disco organised by the town council.
Nit Estellés de Museros
Activity
Open-air poetic celebration of Museros (L'Horta Nord, Valencia), known as the Festa Estellés or Sopar Estellés, held on a Friday night during the second half of September. That night the people of Museros recite poems by the Burjassot-born writer Vicent Andrés i Estellés, as well as other texts written in Valencian. It is part of the municipality's civic and secular-culture festivities, distinct from the traditional religious celebrations, and champions Valencian lyric poetry, high culture, language and identity.
