What to see and do in Foios

Foios
Village
Foios, or Foyos, is a municipality of L'Horta Nord, in the province of Valencia, with 7,995 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its name comes from the late Latin foveos, 'pits', after the springs that were once abundant in the area. The municipal area stretches from the mountains to the Mediterranean, with a small, barely accessible strip of coast. The present-day centre stems from an Andalusi rahal already recorded in 1235 and conquered by James I in 1237, which after several seigneurial sales reverted to the Crown as a royal town. Its population, barely 200 inhabitants in 1572, grew steadily to exceed 4,000 in 1970 and 7,900 today. Its parish church holds a 15th-century image of the Virgen del Patrocinio, patron saint of the municipality, and amid the market gardens it preserves the hermitage of the Cristo de la Sangre.

Hermitage of el Cristo de la Sangre de Foios
Monument
A hermitage located a kilometre from the town centre of Foios, on the road to Vinalesa, amid the market gardens of L'Horta Nord. The present building, with a Neoclassical façade and rectangular floor plan, is a reconstruction dating from 1942; inside it houses a notable Christ figure by Carmel Vicent. Every 18 August the festivity is held in honour of the Most Holy Christ of the Blood, venerated in the hermitage.
Festivities of Foios
Activity
Patron saint festivities of Foios in honour of the Virgin of the Patrocinio, instituted in 1867 in memory of the rogations made that year in the face of the flooding of the Carraixet ravine and the Real Acequia de Moncada irrigation canal. They are held on the second weekend of November and begin with the Diana, an early-morning gathering in which musicians and residents sing the hymn to the Virgin before having chocolate with ensaimadas. The programme also includes the climb to the bell tower, the calderas, with the distribution of traditional food to the town throughout the morning, and the procession in honour of the patron saint, after which the band plays in the church.
