Massalfassar
Village
Massalfassar is a municipality in the comarca of L'Horta Nord, in the province of Valencia, with 2,716 inhabitants, whose name comes from the Arabic manzil Hassar, "Hassar's stopping place", and which originated in an Andalusi alquería. In 1240 James I divided its lands among various nobles, although the alquería itself was not granted until 1266, when it passed into the hands of Berenguer Dalmau; over the centuries it changed lordship several times, passing through the Codinacs, Exarch, Belvís, Sobregondi, Muñoz, Jofré and Valeriola families. The late-medieval Black Death struck hard a population that in 1510 numbered about 75 inhabitants, and the subsequent expulsion of the Moriscos, in 1610, reduced it to just six houses, about 25 inhabitants; since then the population gradually recovered until exceeding a thousand in the early 20th century. It preserves the church of San Lorenzo Mártir, from 1461.
