Albalat dels Sorells
Village
Albalat dels Sorells is a municipality of L'Horta Nord, in the province of Valencia, on the plain of the left bank of the Turia, crossed by the Royal Ditch of Moncada, with 4,368 inhabitants. Its name comes from the Arabic al-balāṭ, slab or paved road, after the nearby Via Augusta; the settlement originated in an Andalusi rahal divided into two zones, granted by James I in 1238. The lordship passed through several families until in 1481 Tomàs Sorell bought the seigneury, giving the village its current name. Its most notable building is the Castell-Palau dels Sorells, a fortified seigneurial residence with a rectangular plan, four corner towers and a central courtyard, built around 1480. Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1985, it now houses the town hall.
