What to see and do in Canet lo Roig

Canet lo Roig
Village
Canet lo Roig is a municipality of El Baix Maestrat, in the province of Castellón, known for its thousand-year-old olive trees, situated in the middle basin of the río Cérvol. The first settlers left pottery from the late Bronze Age and the early Iberian culture at the top of the hill on which the village stands, occupied until Romanisation, at the end of the 3rd century BC. With the Romans came irrigation, horticulture and fruit trees, and the inhabitants left the hill to settle beside the rivers; from that period survive Iberian gravestones and stelae found at Plà dels Vinyets, evidence of a population that already knew writing. The Hispano-Romans continued to populate the area until the arrival of the Arabs, in the 7th century.
Millennial olive trees of Canet lo Roig
Monument
Centuries-old and thousand-year-old olive trees, a hallmark of the landscape of Canet lo Roig.
Old medieval prison of Canet lo Roig
Monument
Former jail or 'detainee depot' of medieval origin, from the 14th century, located on the steep Calle Planet d'en Roig. It preserves an ashlar stone doorway with a half-moon lintel leading to a chamber with a skylight and, from there, to two dungeons in total darkness.
Palace of els Capellans
Monument
The Palau dels Capellans of Canet lo Roig preserves a Gothic chapel that was part of an old mansion-palace of the Montserrat family. Its nave is divided into four bays by pointed arches; the last one, corresponding to the head of the church, is covered by a ribbed vault. On the keystone of this vault the construction date, 1518 (MDXVIII), is engraved, confirming the traditional dating of the building.
Church of San Miguel Arcángel de Canet lo Roig
Monument
Church at the centre of the town, seat of a parish of the diocese of Tortosa, whose construction began around 1288 following a Gothic model with Romanesque survivals, reusing walls and a Romanesque doorway now walled up. It was renovated in the 16th century, possibly by Martín Mendoza, and in the mid-18th century was enlarged at the foot of the original temple, changing the main chapel; the work on the apse and the neoclassical transept with dome was completed in 1793. Of the original church, with a nave with a ribbed vault and chapels between buttresses, two doorways survive: one Gothic, undecorated, and another late Romanesque, walled up, which may have been the original entrance. The square bell tower ends in a balustrade. In 1998 the dome, then broken, was restored, in works completed in 2001.
Hermitage of Santa Isabel de Canet lo Roig
Monument
Hermitage of medieval origin, with no documented record but whose structure suggests it, located just over a kilometre south of Canet lo Roig, next to the barranc de Les Planes. It consists of a single nave covered by a pointed barrel vault, supported by buttresses, with a small porticoed forecourt at the foot and an extremely modest façade of flagstone and roughly squared ashlar. Restored, with its surroundings landscaped, it now serves as a picnic area, favoured by large plane trees that cast shade in front of the hermitage; it is a Bien de Rellevància Local (Spain's regional heritage-protection status, below Bien de Interés Cultural), with the category of Monument d'Interès Local. The feast is celebrated on the seventh weekend after Easter Sunday, the one following Corpus Christi, with a pilgrimage, mass, blessing of the parish bounds, distribution of pastissets and dancing.
Spring of Vilagrós de Canet lo Roig
Curiosity
A vaulted fountain of Roman origin in the municipal district of Canet lo Roig which still preserves carvings on its stones, the starting point of routes among the municipality's more than 1,100 thousand-year-old olive trees.
