What to see and do in Traiguera

Traiguera
Village
Traiguera is a municipality of El Baix Maestrat, in the province of Castellón, at 271 metres above sea level, in the first foothills of the Maestrazgo, with about 1,300 inhabitants. The town preserves, on its northern side, on a spur, remains of a medieval wall and a gateway of the walled enclosure. Five centuries of Muslim presence (718-1232) left a deep mark on place names and customs before James I of Aragon conquered these lands in the 13th century, after which it came under the Order of the Hospital and later that of Montesa. The town hosted sessions of the Valencian Cortes in 1411, 1421 and 1429; its sanctuary of the Virgen de la Salud, whose first chapel dates from 1384, was linked to those same orders. Its economy is based on the olive, the almond and citrus fruit.
Festivities of Traiguera
Activity
Traiguera's patronal festival is in honour of the Virgen de la Asunción and Sant Roc, held from 13 to 22 August with processions, bulls and dances.
Fair of l'Oli
Activity
A fair bringing together tradition, natural bounty and food centred on olive oil, in the comarca of El Baix Maestrat.
Chapel of San Jaime de Traiguera
Monument
A chapel attached to the Church of the Asunción in Traiguera, in a municipality whose chief gem is the Royal Monastery of the Virgen de la Salud, built by the orders of Montesa and of the Hospital between the 14th and 16th centuries.
Traiguera summoned to the Valencian Cortes
Historical milestone
The town was summoned twice to the Cortes of the kingdom, in 1411 and 1421, a sign of the weight it then had in the Maestrazgo; its sanctuary of the Virgen de la Salud later received the visit of pope Alexander VI and of Philip II.
