What to see and do in Xert

Xert
Village
Xert (Chert), in El Baix Maestrat, at 469 metres above sea level, has a landscape broken by ravines and rambles of the Maestrazgo, dominated by the Mola de Chert (807 m); it has 702 inhabitants and the hamlet of Anroig. The original settlement was built inside the walled enclosure of a castle of Muslim origin, reconquered in 1233 and given a founding charter in 1235, and belonged to the Order of the Temple and, from 1319, to that of Montesa until the end of the lordships; today that oldest part is largely abandoned. It preserves the hermitage of San Marcos, five or six kilometres from the town centre, with a church, the hermit's dwelling, a watchtower and a porch, and the site of the Mola Murada, a fortified Bronze Age settlement, declared a bien de relevancia local (a heritage protection designation of local scope).
Festivities of Xert
Activity
The patron saint festivities of Xert are held on 12 April in honour of Saint Vincent and on 29 June in honour of Saint Peter, within a festive calendar for the municipality that includes other celebrations throughout the year: on the Sunday closest to 17 January, Saint Anthony is celebrated; on the Saturday closest to 25 April the pilgrimage to the hermitage of Saint Mark takes place, with the distribution of the traditional fogasses; and from 14 to 24 August the main festivities are held in honour of the Virgin of the Assumption and Saint Roch, the village's official patron saints.
Hermitage of San Marcos de Xert
Monument
Hermitage situated five or six kilometres from the town centre of Xert, in the site of la Barcella, where a Muslim settlement existed prior to the Christian conquest, already recorded in 1192. From the old settlement, the defensive tower is preserved, attached to the hermitage itself and sharing its east and south walls with it, a rectangular cistern covered with a barrel vault located to the north, and the porch. The tower, of rectangular plan and rubble masonry with ashlar at the corners, is topped with prismatic battlements; on several ashlar blocks stonemasons' marks can be seen and, on the north-west facade, the inscription "año 18-4". The tower was declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 19 January 2012.
Mola Murada de Xert
Monument
Archaeological site declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), by generic declaration, in the municipal area of Xert, with remains of an old fortified settlement on a rocky rise. It is a Bronze Age settlement with a walled enclosure and remains of rooms inside, a natural stronghold surrounded by escarpments. The municipality of Xert lies in an area of distinctive terrain, between the Turmell (1,281 m) and Talaiola (948 m) mola formations to the north, and bounded to the south by the Parque Natural dels Ports, the Sierra de Enruna and the Coll de Tintorers.
