What to see and do in la Sénia

La Sénia
Village
La Sénia is a town in the foothills of the Ports mountains, in the Montsià comarca, on the border with the Valencian Community, with a furniture-making tradition recognised throughout the 20th century. Its name, shared with the Sénia river, comes from the Arabic sāniya, the tool used to draw water from a well. The Rossegadors and Tenalla caves preserve Levantine rock art cave paintings from the Epipalaeolithic. The lands of the Sénia came under the Order of Saint John from 1178, which granted the first charter of settlement to Guillem de Moragues; the town, then called Cenia, was recognised as such on 17 April 1232. In the Catalan civil war of 1462 it was assaulted several times until it surrendered in 1466. In 1871 King Amadeo I created the Marquisate of La Sénia.
Church of la Sénia
Monument
The church of la Sénia is found in a town that the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem recognised as such in 1232, granting it settlement charters that same year and in 1235; its name comes from the Arabic saniya, the device for drawing water from wells.
Sénia River
Nature
The Sénia river, formerly called the Ulldecona river, rises in the mountains of els Ports de Beseit, in the municipality of la Pobla de Benifassà, at about 1,200 metres of altitude, and runs about 49 kilometres before flowing into the Mediterranean Sea, at the southernmost point of Catalonia. It gives its name to the town of la Sénia and forms the historic border between the Kingdom of Valencia and the Principality of Catalonia, as established by James I in 1240. Its waters are collected in the Ulldecona reservoir and, downstream, flow through steeply sloping areas that favour good oxygenation and abundant vegetation, suitable for fish life; further on they feed the area's irrigated farmland, about 2,360 hectares, before entering the Plana de Vinaròs and reaching the sea near Alcanar.
La Sénia Main Festival
Activity
La Sénia's Festa Major is held in a village where in 1937, in the midst of the Civil War, an airfield was built in the rearguard of the Ebro front; once the war ended, the furniture industry turned it into a benchmark for the sector in Catalonia.
La Sénia Winter Main Festival
Activity
La Sénia's Festa Major d'Hivern is held in the town that the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem recognised as such in 1232, granting it settlement charters that same year and in 1235.
Settlement charters of the Order of Sant Joan
Historical milestone
The Order of Sant Joan de Jerusalem recognised the place as a villa in 1232 and granted charters of settlement in 1232 and 1235. The place name comes from the Arabic saniya, the device for drawing water from wells, and it also gives its name to the river that crosses the district.
1937 airfield
Historical milestone
In 1937, in the middle of the Civil War, an airfield was built on the flat land beside the river, in the rearguard of the Ebro front. With the war over, the municipality remade itself with the furniture industry, which turned it into a benchmark of the sector in Catalonia.
Oil from millennial olive trees of the Territori Sénia
Food and drink
The districts around the river Sénia concentrate one of the largest groupings of thousand-year-old olive trees in the world, coordinated by the association of the Taula del Sénia. From these trees, of the farga variety, come oils of mild bitterness and herbaceous aroma.
