What to see and do in Rossell

Rossell
Village
Rossell is a municipality of El Baix Maestrat, in Castellón, on the border with Tarragona and watered by the río Sénia; occupied since the Neolithic, as shown by the remains of the Witches' Cave, it later saw significant Iberian and Roman occupation. In 1317 the order of Montesa received the alcaldía of Cervera, of which Rossell was the smallest village until the 19th century; during the Reapers' War, the French marshal Schomberg burned it completely in 1648, and in the early modern period and the 19th century it was the scene of bandit gangs. Its hamlet of Bel, depopulated at the end of the 20th century and later resettled, preserves the Romanesque church of San Jaime, from the 13th century, notable for its portal. Around the 1960s it entered industrialisation through the Sénia.

Festivities of Rossell
Activity
The patron saint festivities of Rossell (Baix Maestrat, Castellón), lasting nine days around 15 August, honour the Assumption of the Virgin with an extraordinary offering to residents and visitors. The programme includes bullfighting events, decorated floats, cultural performances, sports competitions and night-time verbenas at the municipal sports centre. The municipality also holds a smaller fair in honour of Saint Joseph around mid-March, with crafts, trade, agricultural machinery and children's activities.
Church of San Jaime de Bel
Monument
Catholic church located in the centre of the hamlet of Bel (Rossell), a former parish of the bishopric of Tortosa, depopulated in the late 20th century and gradually repopulated afterwards, so that religious services are only held on set days. It was built in the mid-13th century, around 1234-1238, shortly after the Christian repopulation of the territory: it has a nave of five bays with round diaphragm arches without buttresses, and a round-arched portal with voussoirs decorated with four-leaf clovers, one of the clearest examples of Romanesque architecture in the Baix Maestrat. The bell tower and sacristy date from the 17th century. In 2006 restoration works on the roof began, following an urgent intervention requested in 1999 to prevent its collapse.
