What to see and do in San Rafael del Río

San Rafael del Río
Village
San Rafael del Río, in El Baix Maestrat, arose from a cluster of olive-growing farmhouses formed as old scrubland was cleared, until it separated from Traiguera on 28 November 1927, when it had almost 800 inhabitants spread across farmhouses. On the right bank of the río Cenia, which here separates Castellón and Tarragona, at 95 metres above sea level, its territory -21.24 km²- was won from the mountain by olive groves: until the mid-19th century it was just one farmhouse among many, but oil production grew to twenty oil mills once it became independent, and today it yields a virgin oil from century-old olive groves. It preserves old mills -Canet, Castell, De Roca, Bordales and Molí de l'Om-, the church of San Rafael Arcángel and a park with the old washhouses.
Park of la Memòria de San Rafael del Río
Monument

Festivities of San Rafael del Río
Activity
San Rafael del Río's patronal festivities honor San Rafael Arcángel, whose parish church, listed as an asset of local relevance, gives its name to this village of olive-growing farmsteads that was split off from Traiguera in 1927.
Church of San Rafael Arcángel de San Rafael del Río
Monument
The parish church of San Rafael, in San Rafael del Río, in the Baix Maestrat area of Castellón, is listed as a Bien de Relevancia Local (Spain's regional heritage-protection status, below Bien de Interés Cultural), under Law 5/2007, amending the Valencian Law on Cultural Heritage. Little information survives about the building and the parish it houses, although it has a parish archive recorded in the Censo-Guía de Archivos de España e Iberoamérica. It stands on the Plaza de la Iglesia, in an area of age-old olive and carob trees beside the river Sénia.
The separation of San Rafael del Río
Historical milestone
The settlement born among olive-growing farmsteads separated from Traiguera in 1927 and formed its own council with close to eight hundred inhabitants, scattered across a municipality won from the scrubland by the spread of the olive grove.
The olive oil of San Rafael del Río
Food and drink
Virgin olive oil obtained from centuries-old olive groves planted when the scrubland was cleared, whose cultivation gave rise to the village itself; the old mills of the district recall when the olive press marked the calendar of the year.
