What to see and do in Sant Jordi

Sant Jordi
Village
Sant Jordi is a municipality of El Baix Maestrat, in Castellón, 82 km from the provincial capital and between 130 and 320 metres above sea level, on a plain of rain-fed crops (olive groves, carob and almond trees) and expanding citrus. It has 1,554 inhabitants (2025), far from the peak of 1,676 reached in 1887 after falling to 605 in 1984. Of Saracen origin, after the Reconquest it was a hamlet of Traiguera until Philip IV granted it the Royal Privilege of independence in 1647, consolidated in 1655. It preserves the parish church, begun in 1735 with a bell tower from 1759, and the stone washhouses called Pous de Muntells. Its Bovalar municipal nature site runs along a trail through the Aleppo pine forest and Mediterranean scrub, among four traditional lime kilns, a sinkhole and wrought-iron sculptures.
El Bovalar de Sant Jordi
Nature
El Bovalar de Sant Jordi is a white pine forest in the municipality of Sant Jordi, in the Baix Maestrat, declared a Paratge Natural Municipal in 2006. With 27.38 hectares, it forms a residual forest landscape amid the surrounding dryland crops, just over a kilometre from the population centre, which gives it value as a recreational space for local residents, from where panoramic views of the dels Ports mountains and the Tinença de Benifassà can be seen. The site preserves three old lime kilns, of ethnological interest. The trail that runs through it also takes in a sinkhole and wrought-iron sculptures. The vegetation combines scrubland of mastic, kermes oak, rosemary and heather with a reforested pine wood, and it is home to protected fauna such as the ocellated lizard, the jay and the weasel.
