What to see and do in La Jana

La Jana
Village
La Jana is a municipality of the Baix Maestrat comarca, in the north of the province of Castellón, in the transition zone between the Maestrazgo and the plain of Vinaroz, 297 metres above sea level; it has 679 inhabitants (INE 2025) and lives from agriculture, above all from the olive. It has protohistoric habitats from the 7th century BC at Els Castellets and from the Iberian period at Vilarroig. Its urban centre was probably the site of Intibilis, a mansio on the Via Augusta where it crossed the Via Hercúlea between Peñíscola and Zaragoza, attested by a bronze statuette of Hercules found in 1943 in the plaza Mayor. It was a lordship of the Order of the Hospital and later of that of Montesa, until it became an independent town in 1540. It preserves the parish church of San Bartolomé, from the late 17th century, and in its main square a 4th-century Roman milestone of the Via Augusta.

Monument
The Roman milestone of the Vía Augusta, from the 4th century, is preserved in the Plaza Mayor of La Jana, at the place the Romans knew as Intibilis, a mansio or stopping point on the road itself. Roman coins, tiles and pottery from the same period have also appeared in the town centre, and in that same square a bronze statuette of the god Hercules was found in 1943.
