La Dehesa of Soneja Nature · Soneja, El Alto Palancia, Castellón A municipal natural area of Soneja declared in 2002, with an interpretation centre and the botanical micro-reserve of the Balsa de la Dehesa. It occupies a plateau at about 440 metres above sea level in the comarca of Alto Palancia, where two lagoons are located - one now dried up - formed on Triassic sandstones that retain water thanks to the underlying clays. Within the protected area there are six archaeological sites from the Bronze Age and the Iberian period. It stands out for its siliceous vegetation, with cork-oak woods and an endorheic lagoon unique in the Comunitat Valenciana, alongside traditional crops of almond, carob and olive trees. It is home to vulnerable species such as the western spadefoot toad and the sharp-ribbed newt, and is included in the Comunitat Valenciana's Catalogue of Wetlands.
