Carlist walls of Soneja Monument · Soneja, El Alto Palancia, Castellón The walls of Soneja are the remains of the defensive fortification the town built between 1839 and 1840, after the assault it suffered on 17 July 1836, when José Miralles, el Serrador, entered the town, taking advantage of the fact that a good part of the able-bodied men had fled, and the population was looted and set on fire, with victims among the residents. Following the intervention of General Narváez, Soneja decided to wall itself in, combining the walls of the houses themselves, with loopholes cut into them, trenches and walls closing off the streets, built of rammed earth. Today barely any remains survive, with a few loopholes still visible; the ensemble has been declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since January 2012.
