Aín
Village
Aín is one of the smallest municipalities of La Plana Baixa, in the province of Castellón, on the northern slope of the Sierra de Espadán, in a hollow surrounded by mountains covered with cork oaks and pine forests, with 133 inhabitants. Of Arabic origin, its name means spring; it was conquered by James I in 1239, who kept the Muslim population under the qadi of Eslida according to the 1242 settlement charter. In 1526, faced with forced baptism, the Moriscos of Aín joined the uprising of the Sierra de Espadán until it was suppressed; after the expulsion of 1609 they took refuge in the sierra again, but were forced to surrender and were exiled. The economy has been based on dryland farming, with olives, almonds, apples and cherries as the main crops.

Parish church of San Miguel, in Aín (Castellón), in the comarca of Plana Baixa. Built in the 18th century, it has a single nave with Corinthian-style columns and a tower of ashlar masonry. Among its heritage, a 19th-century canvas of San Ambrosio stands out, preserved inside.

Fortress of Arab origin in the municipality of Aín, with a keep and a watchtower, the scene of the 16th-century Morisco resistance. It is a medieval hill-type fortification, of irregular and scattered plan, with several walled enclosures and an auxiliary barbican tower on the outside; inside are preserved remains of the rooms and cisterns typical of the garrison's daily life. The keep stands out, cylindrical in shape, which had a moat and a drawbridge to reinforce its defenses.

La Covatilla, on the northern slope of the Sierra de Espadán, is a cave through which an underground watercourse flows, part of the hydrological network also formed by the Fuente Caridad and the Fuente Caliente, springs that give character to the municipality of Aín.
Arab origin of the name Aín
Curiosity
The name Aín derives from the Arabic Ayn, meaning spring or source; the municipality was conquered by Jaime I in 1239. After the conquest, the Muslim population remained in the area under the jurisdiction of the qadi of Eslida, as recorded in the carta puebla of 1242. Coexistence broke down in the early 16th century, when the inhabitants were forced to be baptized under threat of death or exile, which led to a Morisco uprising in 1526 and, finally, to the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609.

The revolt of the Sierra de Espadán
Historical milestone
The Espadán revolt was a Mudejar uprising that broke out in 1526 in response to the order issued by Charles I on 13 September 1525, which forced Valencian Mudejars to convert to Christianity. It was joined mainly by the inhabitants of the Sierra de Espadán, where a large Muslim population had concentrated after the conquest by James I, who respected their lands, their religion and their institutions in exchange for recognition of Christian sovereignty; thus, as early as 1242, the king granted a founding charter to the aljamas of Eslida, Aín, Jinquer, Pelmes and Sueras. Thousands of Mudejars held out on the mountain peaks under the leader Zelim Almanzor until they were defeated in September by royal troops and German landsknechts.
