What to see and do in Alcudia de Veo

Alcudia de Veo
Village
Alcudia de Veo is a small municipality of La Plana Baixa, on the northern slope of the Sierra de Espadán, on the banks of the river Veo and within its natural park, with 200 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its municipal area, mostly forested, with cork oaks, pines and holm oaks, was originally an Islamic alquería, reconquered by James I around 1238; a place inhabited by Moriscos, in 1609 it had about 600 inhabitants, who rose up after the expulsion decree, and it remained nearly depopulated well into the 20th century. Besides Alcudia, which is Spanish-speaking, it includes Benitandús and Veo, which are Valencian-speaking. It retains centuries-old chestnut trees in the ravine of la Juliana and at Xinquer, whose chestnuts are roasted in autumn; it is also home to the Órganos de Benitandús, the cave of la Chelva, with an underground river, and the Muslim castle of Xinquer.
Parish Church of Alcudia de Veo
Monument
Parish church of Alcudia de Veo (Castellón), dedicated to San Miguel Arcángel and dating from the 18th century. It stands on the central square of the municipality, surrounded by steep streets of traditional architecture, and is the main religious building of this small town in the Plana Baixa.
Church of San Miguel Arcángel de Alcudia de Veo
Monument
The church of San Miguel Arcángel, in Alcudia de Veo (Castellón), right in the heart of the Sierra de Espadán, is the parish church of the municipality, on which the churches of Veo and Benitandús depend as annexes, within the diocese of Segorbe-Castellón. Its construction began in the 17th century, after the expulsion of the Moriscos from the Kingdom of Valencia, when the new Christian settlers reformed the village's former mosque — already consecrated as a church by the mid-16th century — and turned it into an abbey house, raising a new parish temple. The works were finished before 1748, already in the 18th century, the year in which an earthquake destroyed the village except for the bell tower, which fell in a second tremor on 2 April. In August 1936, images, retables, and ornaments of the temple were burned.
Castle of el Xinquer
Monument
The castle of Xinquer stands on a rocky outcrop crowning a hill, next to the abandoned hamlet of Xinquer, in the deserted settlement of the same name within the municipality of Alcudia de Veo (Castellón); it is reached by a forest track branching off the road between Alcudia de Veo and Algimia de Almonacid. It follows the usual patterns and typology of Muslim fortresses, although the lack of documentation makes it impossible to determine its origin and dating with certainty. It is very deteriorated and in ruins, and only remains of a few walls and two towers are preserved; given its location, it probably served a function of defending and protecting the territory.
Organs of Benitandús
Nature
The Órganos de Benitandús already attracted attention in the 19th century: Pascual Madoz's geographical dictionary describes them as elaborate, rugged crags facing the village, which at the time enjoyed great renown in the comarca. These are geological formations of parallel peaks resembling organ pipes, created by water erosion, in the municipality of Alcudia de Veo, in Plana Baixa.
Cave of la Chelva
Nature
Also known as the Cueva del Toro, a vertical opening in the rock with waterfalls and an underground river in Alcudia de Veo, accessible only to experienced divers.
Centuries-old chestnut trees of Alcudia de Veo
Curiosity
Chestnut woods in the Barranco de la Juliana and in Xinquer, in the municipality of Alcudia de Veo, with specimens over 200 years old. These are small woods located next to the deserted settlement of Xinquer, whose importance lies in the fact that nowhere else in the entire Valencian Community is there another stand of forest like this one, made up of centuries-old chestnut trees.
Festivities of San Pedro Mártir de Alcudia de Veo
Activity
Pilgrimage of Alcudia de Veo to the Fuente de San Pedro Mártir, on the 29th of April, in a village of the Sierra de Espadán with forests of centuries-old chestnut trees and the Muslim castle of Xinquer.
The chestnuts of the Sierra de Espadán
Food and drink
The centuries-old chestnut trees that grow in the damp ravines of the sierra give a chestnut that is roasted in autumn and kept dried; it is a rare crop in Valencian country, tied to the sandstone soils of the Espadán.
