What to see and do in Valdaracete

Valdaracete
Village
Valdaracete is a municipality of about 660 inhabitants on the high plateau of southeastern Madrid, in the Las Vegas and Alcarria de Chinchón comarcas; in the mid-19th century it had as many as 1,698 inhabitants. Its church of San Juan Bautista, built between 1593 and 1607 under the patronage of the Duke of the Infantado, is attributed to Juan de Herrera, the architect of El Escorial, and preserves inside an old baptismal font that may have belonged to an earlier temple, from when the village marked the border between the lands of the Order of Santiago and those of the Order of Calatrava. The spire of its bell tower was added after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The village celebrates the Virgin of la Pera in May and the Christ of the Ecce Homo in September.
Church of San Juan Bautista de Valdaracete
Monument
Temple built between 1593 and 1607, in a late Renaissance of Herrerian style that tradition attributes to Juan de Herrera, the architect of El Escorial, under the patronage of the Duke of Infantado, lord of the town. It has a Latin-cross plan, a single nave with a marked transept, and a bell tower that dominates the hamlet of the Madrid páramo; the spire was added after the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. The façades are of reinforced masonry with ashlar at the corners, plinths, lintels and mouldings. Inside is preserved a choir raised at the foot of the church on three stone arches and a baptismal font that may come from an earlier medieval temple.
