What to see and do in Fuentidueña de Tajo

Fuentidueña de Tajo
Village
Fuentidueña de Tajo is a village of about 2,370 inhabitants situated at one of the lowest points in the Community of Madrid, with an average altitude of 562 metres, only lower still than Villa del Prado. The Tagus river crosses its territory and gives the village its name together with the Fuente Salobre, also called Fuente de la Dueña because it lay under the domain of Doña Urraca; the spring rises behind the parish church, at the foot of the castle. Beside the river, riverside and steppe ecosystems unfold with birds such as the mallard, and amphibians and reptiles such as the grass snake. The village is watched over by the tower of the Piquillos, of the Order of Santiago, and the church of San Andrés; every September it embarks its Virgen de Alarilla on the river.
Castle of Santiago de Fuentidueña
Monument
A 12th-century fortress remodelled in the 15th, also known as the Torre de los Piquillos, which belonged to the Order of Santiago and served as a prison for Don Álvaro de Luna; in ruins, it commands the Tagus crossing from the hilltop.
The fuero of Fuentidueña de Ocaña
Historical milestone
The town, then called Fuentidueña de Ocaña, received the fuero that fixed the rights of its residents. The castle of la Alarilla, taken by Alfonso VI in 1085, would end up in the hands of the Order of Santiago.
