What to see and do in Estremera

Estremera
Village
Estremera is the easternmost municipality of the Community of Madrid, located at 642 metres of altitude in the comarcas of Las Vegas and La Alcarria, near the Tagus and on the border with Castilla-La Mancha. It has about 1,470 inhabitants, far from the roughly 3,000 it had in the mid-19th century according to Madoz's Diccionario. Its life today revolves largely around the Madrid VII Penitentiary Centre, opened in 2008 and considered the most modern in the province. The village preserves the church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios and a town hall whose façade shows six stone arches; the Camino de Uclés passes through its territory.
Church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios de Estremera
Monument
A 16th-century church whose construction was paid for by Ruy Gómez de Silva and his wife Ana de Mendoza after they acquired the town in 1568; it was declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (Spain's heritage designation in force between 1931 and 1985) by decree of 11 May 1982 and preserves the altarpiece of the chapel of San José.
The Uclés Way as it passes through Estremera
Activity
A pilgrimage route towards the Santiago order's monastery of Uclés, in Cuenca, which crosses the municipal district of Estremera and links this town in the far south-east of the Madrid region with what was the spiritual head of the Order of Santiago.
