What to see and do in Carabaña

Carabaña
Village
Carabaña is a Madrid locality of about 2,450 inhabitants, in the vega of the Tajuña river, within the comarca of Las Vegas. It was part of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra of Alcalá de Henares until it gained independence as a town in 1557. It has grown olives since Roman times and is today one of the region's main producers of extra virgin olive oil, with centuries-old olive trees. Since the 1880s it has been known for its purgative mineral waters, rich in sodium sulphate, whose spring is on the cerro de Cabeza Gorda; marketed as Agua de Carabaña, they achieved international fame and were even used to make soaps and bath salts. During the Civil War, the spa next to the spring was the headquarters of the General Staff of the 18th Brigade.
